It has often been said by some people in the security business that there are two approaches to security. One of them is based on using the most high-tech toys available. Things like infrared cameras, motion detection, silent alarms, security booby traps, and of course hidden security cameras are used in elaborate networks to snare any potential offender. The system should be as difficult to detect as possible. As a matter of fact, a security system like this may be all but invisible. The criminals will not even know they are being watched until they're caught, at least if everything works according to plan.
The other way of doing it is comparatively low tech. Basically, what you want to do is to intimidate people out of violating your security system. Don't get me wrong – there is usually a very real threat to these systems as well. Both systems use burglar alarms and intrusion detection devices, but in this case you can post warnings and tell criminals that they are being watched. You want them to know there is a security system there so they don't mess with you. In my opinion, the latter is the best solution for most businesses. Of course, a lot of that has to do with my background. You see, the way I started in this business was through working in installing security cages. There are many different types of secure cages. There is, of course, the wire mesh security cage that you see in basement storage units in apartments, in rental storage rooms in some areas, and other similar applications. If someone is really persistent, they can get into something like this, but it takes a lot of work. Sometimes, it requires a metal cutter, and it always at least takes a pair of bolt cutters. Of course, a security cage can be much more high-tech than this. The security partitions at banks could be classified as a kind of security cage. They can protect employees from all but the most high-tech weapons, allowing them to escape danger if the bank is robbed. A security cage can even be used as a booby-trap sometimes. This is always popularized in movies, where you see a secure cage dropping down to trap whatever precious artifact the burglar is trying to steal. Often, it traps him in the process. Still, high-tech and low-tech, security cages all provide an intimidating presence. In my opinion, most business owners don't want trouble. They would rather scared criminals away with an impressive display than try to catch them in the act.
