As a kid, I used to adore Sesame Street toys. There was nothing in the world I liked quite so much. We used to go to Toys R Us toy store once a month. It was usually a special occasion – if we had been good, helped with chores, and obeyed our parents they would take us. We knew enough to be good kids. You see, my parents believed very firmly in rewards and punishments. When we were good, they did nice things for us. When we were bad, they punished us harshly. It really taught us right from wrong.
I would know that I had been very good for a particular month when I got to come home with a new Sesame Street toy. I liked all of the Sesame Street toys. This was before tickle me Elmo came out, when Sesame Street was all about big Bird. One time, I actually got a 3 foot tall stuffed big Bird Sesame Street toy. My parents must have regretted that decision! I talked to it more than I talked my actual family, and would spend hours in my room alone with the big bird, playing imaginary games. Of course, not all of the Sesame Street toys were simply dolls meant for fun. Some of them actually were quite educational. When I was a little one, my parents got me a Sesame Street toddler toy. I don't remember everything about it, but I do remember all the interesting dials it had. I think it would tell me about different animals and I would have to match them with the pictures. Whatever it was, I absolutely loved it. I don't think they make that particular model anymore, but that idea has persisted among toddlers toys. I'm sure you can find Sesame Street toys like that. After all, they have always been good at designing educational toys. Now that I'm shopping for presents for my own kids, I'm surprised to see that the Sesame Street toys have stayed remarkably the same over the years. They have hardly changed at all since I was very young. Nowadays, there are more Sesame Street Elmo toys, and some of the other playthings are more high-tech than they used to be. Nonetheless, the basic ideas are almost the same. As a matter of fact, I wish I still had my old toys from on I was a kid. I bet they would love playing with those.
