Do you ever stop to think about the games that you played as a child? There were so many outdoor and indoor games that I used to play with my siblings and friends. Some of them are still around today and others have been pushed aside to make room for the higher tech games. One rule that I have with my children with playing games is that for every game they have that uses a battery or computer or television they have to have a game that does not require any source of energy. They used to complain and fight this rule; however since they have started planning board games and card games they find that they enjoy them.

When we go to the family cabin they have to play the old fashion games because there is no television or computer at the cabin. My sister-in-law agrees with not allowing any technology into the cabin so we are always looking for different board games as well as cards and puzzles to have at the cabin. She was cleaning out her mother’s home and found an old mr potato head game. I had one of these games when I was growing up and had completely forgotten about it. Our children had heard of mr potato head, but they did not realize that there was a game that went with it. The object of the mr potato head game is to get the pieces to put him together. This is a board game where players take turns rolling the dice and moving around the board trying to land on the right space to earn a piece to put Mr. Potato head together. The first person to have him put together wins. The game is geared towards young children, however it seems like kids of all ages like to play.

We also have several decks of cards available for the kids and adults to play solitaire or games that involve other players. We are always glad to have the games available because it seems like there is always a day of rain or a day when everyone is too sunburned to want to be outside. I think it is important that kids find ways of entertaining themselves that does not include the high tech items. We also keep a nice selection of books at the cabin so that reading is always an option. My daughter, who is fifteen, and constantly on the phone at home, discovered how much she enjoys reading when we were at the cabin this summer. Her cell phone does not work from the cabin so she did not have that activity to fall back on. The first day she picked up one of the books that was up there and it seems she has been reading ever since. I am glad she discovered that she enjoys reading, it is one of my favorite pass times.
