In order to win at poker, you have to make a bet. Poker is after all a game of gambling, and players must be willing to take risks in order to win a hand. The rules of poker betting are the same for most card games.
Poker betting always begins with some kind of ‘ante’. Antes are forced bets that players must make before even receiving their cards. The point of the ante is to ensure that someone will win some amount of money each hand, and that the game doesn’t stagnate. Traditionally, any players that want to participate in a hand must make antes. The ante is usually a small bet and is the same for each player. More recently, an ante system called ‘blinds’ has become popular. Blinds are slightly larger antes that are made by one or two of the players only. Usually the player to the right of the dealer is selected to make what is called the ‘big blind’, and the next player to the right makes an ante that is half that amount, called the ‘small blind’. If the big blind is designated to be $20 dollars, the small blind is then $10. Depending on the players and the game, the small blind may not be used in some poker betting. Whether or not you are using blinds or regular antes, poker betting has the same basic four options. First there is the ‘check’, which passes the betting over to the next player. A player can only check if there has not been a bet or raise made. Therefore, if blinds are being used, the players who did not make the big blind cannot check in the first round of betting because the big blind is a bet that must be called, raised or folded to. The bet or raise is the next option in poker betting. Most poker variants allow players to bet at any time when it is their turn in the betting order, however there are often restrictions on how much can be raised. If there has already been a bet made, such as the big blind, then any further bets made by a player are called ‘raises’. When facing a bet or raise, players can also ‘call’. When a player calls, he or she simply meets the bet or raise exactly. The last option players have in poker betting is to ‘fold’ or throw away their cards, forfeiting any chance of winning the pot. Players should only fold if they are facing a bet or raise that they do not wish to call. If no bets or raises are on the table, a player can then just check and pass the betting onto the next player. Poker betting is very simple, and works this same way regardless of the version of poker you are playing.
