Teen Drug Use
One of the biggest problems facing parents today is teen drug use. Teenage pregnancy is another problem, but it is not something that is as dangerous as using drugs. When teens get mixed up with the wrong people, or they look for a way to dull the pain of the teen years, they may turn to all types of drugs as a results. Teenagers are not able to see the consequences of their actions as clearly as they would when they become adults, so this makes the temptation of drugs even more dangerous. Every parent, no matter how well they think they know their children, should be aware of the signs of drug use and what to do about it when the think something has gone terribly wrong. Though not every family will have to deal with teen drug use, chances are good that they will know someone who is dealing with it. Things like drugs and alcohol are so easy to get, despite laws that are in place to keep them out of the hands children and teens. I know that when I was a teenager, beer was never something that was hard to get, and drugs were everywhere. Thankfully, I didn’t do much damage, and I was always smart enough to stay away from the drugs. Had there not been a drug related death in my life, I might have fallen into the trap just like everyone else around me. Teen drug use is sometimes the result of dulling pain, and is sometimes the result of peer pressure. Every child is at risk, even the ones that you would never suspect. You have to know what to look for, and you have to stop thinking your child is above such things. Denial will do more harm than you can realize. You should be sure to be involved in your child’s life enough so that you know when things begin to change. Odd behaviors are often the first signs of teen drug use. Once the behavior changes, you can then look for other signs. If your teenager is suddenly hanging out with different people, and spending a lot of time away from your home, you may have something to worry about. You should know the physical symptoms of drugs as well, like red and glassy eyes that happen with pot smoking, and the jitters that might come from using cocaine. Some drugs are taken through needles, so those that are shooting up might wear clothing to cover up those marks. Teen drug use can often lead to trouble with the law as well. Once you know there is a problem, speak with your family doctor at once. They can guide you in the right direction and help you along the way.
