Fayetteville North Carolina
Nicknamed the City of Dogwoods, the county seat of Cumberland County is Fayetteville North Carolina. The town was named in honor of the French army officer, the Marquis de La Fayette, who was considered a war hero in the American Revolutionary War. The area is most associated with nearby Fort Bragg, where several units of US Army Airborne units are in barracks. The station is famous for being the site where the jeep was first tested. Pope Air Force Base supports the efforts of the armed services and has also been involved in flying humanitarian missions across the world. The Cape Fear River Trail is a valuable resource, providing a great family day out and a chance to get close to nature. The path is paved and access is allowed to any form of non-powered transport and so walkers, bicyclists, joggers and rollerbladers can enjoy the peace and quite. Some of the route has a steep gradient and bicyclists are asked to stay under 15mph. Visitors can take their dogs but they have to be leashed. In warm weather, the mosquitoes come out in Fayetteville North Carolina and the advice is to take insect repellant. There are picnic areas and two locations where drinking water is available. The trail also has portable toilets and call boxes in case of emergency. The four mile trail offers marvelous views of the river and the opportunity to see 700 different kinds of plants and trees and 50 species of birds. Frogs, lizards, deer and turtles are resident and there is one of the most diverse numbers of hardwood trees in a small area. There are also marshes and wetlands, which are crossed over, via a 700 foot boardwalk. Wooden bridges connect the path and signs give information on various aspects of the trail. The Hay Street United Methodist Church is noteworthy because it was the first Methodist church to be built in Fayetteville North Carolina. It was completed in 1835 and re-built in 1908 and is listed as a historical building. Visitors are attracted to the church because of the beautiful stained glass windows and the impressive pipe organ. Cape Fear Botanical Garden is another chance to see the natural world. It opened in 1989 to aid the studies of the horticulture Department at the Technical Community College. Today, the public can enjoy its 85 acres of unusual plants, hardwood hills, pine forests, river banks and nature trails. The staff do an important job in conserving local plant species from the Fayetteville North Carolina region.
