In some ways I think we are turning into a society of hypochondriacs. You cannot watch a television show or listen to the radio without being exposed to some type of cure whether it is a medication, lotion, herbal drink or a medical device. We are lead to believe that no matter what type of ache and pain we have there is a pill we can pop, or a lotion that we can rub on to make the pain stop.

The practice of advertising prescription medications has only begun over the past ten years. Prior to that time the names of medications were not readily known among the general population. Now when people experience any signs or symptoms that they hear associated with a certain medication they so into the doctor with a request for that particular medication. By doing this they are already persuading the doctor to concentrate on one particular cause for the signs and symptoms that they are experiencing and in reality there could multiple reasons for what they are experiencing. A good physician will listen to what the patient is saying regarding the signs and symptoms they are experiencing and will then ask for more details and information. Then a thorough physical examination should be done including blood tests and urine tests. It is only after all these things are completed that the discussion of medication and prescriptions should take place.

The greatest concern is when general practitioners begin handing our medications that are used for mental health disorders. Many of the medications used for anxiety, depression, sleep issues and other mental health concerns need to be taken in conjunction with individual or group therapy. If the medication is given based on signs and symptoms of depression without the right follow up services, the patient is not going to address the causes of the depression. The signs and symptoms may be alleviated for a time, but the patient will not have an understanding of what caused the symptoms in the first place and how to deal with them should they surface again.

The drug companies are trying to use consumers to ask for medications by name. They are advertising that any and all pain needs to be medicated immediately. This can be very dangerous because many common ailments that will pass quickly on their own are medicated. Often times the side effects from the medications can lead to other issues and symptoms which leads to another prescription. This can be a vicious cycle. There are times when people need to find other ways of soothing their discomfort rather than popping a pill.
