Wine Ratings

Wine ratings are used to categorize wines by different wine sellers and auctions, and are based on different rating scales. These scales consider the aroma, color, flavor, bouquet, and appearance, and usually the higher the rating the higher the price, although this is not always the case. Wine ratings can assist the buyer in making a selection, and of course these ratings vary depending on who has rated the wine, and his or her tastes in wine. There are also various publications devoted to wine and the wine connoisseur, such as, The Wine Spectator, Wine & Spirits Magazine, and The Wine Enthusiast. All three of these magazines contain include various wines and their ratings, information about who rated the wines, origin, food parings, price, and of course, advertisements for the various wines featured. Some of these publications also offer online versions for web enthusiast. There is such a vast array of wines available in different price ranges, that you can of course conduct your own taste test!

The most respected wine rating system is The Wine Advocate, which uses a scale from 50 to 100; wines over 80 are very good, and those with a score over 90 are excellent. If you are fond of California wines, you may consider checking out the Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wine, which rates wines on a scale from 70 to 100. A wine rated from 80 to 86 is considered good, and above 86 is spectacular depending on your taste preference. Of course, I would not venture to try a wine that is rated below 80, it may be “sour grapes”! There are also other rating systems available that are used for wines from specific countries, such as, Greece, Italy, Australia, and France, just to name a few.

When tasting a wine, you should always start with a clean palate, otherwise your tasting experience will not be optimal. A clean, fresh wine glass should be used to serve the wine at the correct temperature. The glass should always be held at the stem to not warm the wine, which will influence your end result. The glass should be filled halfway and the appearance of the wine should be noted. The aroma of the wine is then released by swirling the glass, releasing a combination of smells which you can use your imagination to identify. Next, take a small sip and let it sit on your tongue before swallowing; note the flavor and texture, what you like and what you don’t like. Everyone is very unique and when tasting with others you may not have the same experience, that’s what makes it fun! Compare notes and keep a list of the winners and those that didn’t impress you. You can become your own wine expert and build an impressive selection to accompany all of your dinners and social gatherings! Cheers!
